Clean Energy Neighborhoods
To meet its emissions mandates, Massachusetts is planning to transition over 80% of its buildings to efficient electric heat pumps by 2050 and then produce that electricity with renewables.
The result will improve air quality, provide better health outcomes, and reduce our impact on our children’s climate.
However, it will require a lot of work, including retrofitting over 80% of our buildings to move to local renewable energy. These retrofits (switching out gas appliances, upgrading the electric panel, etc.) can cost over $20,000 per unit post rebates.
Proposed Strategies
Black Swan Lab is exploring how to pay for the clean energy retrofits needed in our buildings by reallocating financial waste. The strategies below could help us move to clean local energy at speed and scale, and in an equitable way.
